What Gear Do I Need?
(Content originally adapted from NK's 2007 gear list)

West Marine and The Olympic Outdoor Center are good local sources.  There are also many options online such as West Coast Sailing, Annapolis Performance Sailing and Sierra Trading Post

West Coast Sailing and APS both offer discounts for high school sailors.  The cost estimates below are for excellent quality, brand name gear.

If you are up for a drive to Seattle, one of the best places you could look is called Fisheries Supply.  It's very near Gasworks Park on the north side of Lake Union.  They will discount gear 20% if you tell them you are on the high school sailing team.  The gear tends to be on the high end, but it's worth it if you are committed to sailing.

A Type three PFD (lifejacket) is required. Short in the waist, light and flexible and preferably in a high visibility color.
Estimate: $75 to $100

Warm, waterproof or resistant clothing is a must. This can be in the form of inexpensive rain gear all the way to a wet or dry suit. Freedom of movement is important, as this type of sailing is very athletic. We recommend a set of bibs and a dinghy smock or dry top. The best types are breathable fabric and very comfortable.  You will need to layer clothing. The temperature in March and April varies significantly between 3:00 and 6:00.
Estimate: around $100 each for tops and bottoms

Thin wet suits designed specifically for sailing also work well.
Estimate: $200 for a good one
wetsuit

Boots of light and flexible design are recommended. Ronstan or Gill Zip boots are excellent. Wet suit booties and aqua socks work fine. Your feet will be wet. School-shoes and open toed sandals are not advised. No bare feet due to injury hazards.
Estimate: $50

The Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012 or a book including them is recommended. The Rules are available through US Sailing at 1 800 USSAIL 1 I or at www.ussailing.org. West Marine and various bookstores also may stock books including the rules.

Other gear you may wish to have might include: sailing gloves, a tight fitting hat, sun glasses, sun block, a towel and a Leatherman style tool.

We sail, rain or shine. Only excessive winds will keep us off the water. If you are properly prepared, you will find rainy days to be just another opportunity to sail and have fun. Really ugly days, we hope will be spent in classroom sessions at either the Silverdale Port office or the covered pavilion at the park. These will be valuable in learning and improving your skills in Team Racing, rules, or tactics. We will attempt to be on the water every practice day.
